August 30, 2024, New York, NY: Today, NYC singer/songwriter/pianist, Lizzie Thomas releases an original new track and video, Community, an anthem for unity, hope, and peace at a time when we need it more than ever.
You and me, community, don’t forget that we are free-
I believe we’ll come together in timeCommunity is a breakthrough sound for Thomas, moving just outside the timeless standards she celebrates in her previous 5 albums. The new single combines spiritual, soul, folk, and jazz creating a funky, jazzy, soulful sound.
Reflecting on where the new sound’s origin, Lizzie Thomas says, “I think we need, now more than ever, songs that inspire our better selves.” Community is just that — where we understand ourselves by coming together, both in genre and with each other.
Thomas’ band elevates the song with longtime MD and arranger John Di Martino on piano, Kevin Sibley on B3 Hammond Organ, Dan Wilson on electric guitar, Dezron Douglas on electric bass, and Neal Smith on drums. The single is recorded at the renowned Powerstation, NYC, and includes the Voices of the Flame choir.
Lizzie, who also produced the recording, set out to find a visual representation to balance the imagery of the message. The video captures NYC in all its glory- the street scenes, the bustle, the whole opulent mosaic. What’s more, AME Mother Zion Church plays a lead role in driving the song’s inspiration. Known as the “freedom church,” it carries the history of the Underground Railroad and well over a century of struggle and adversity, and triumph over both.
Community, though a departure from the jazz standards Lizzie Thomas is known for, carries the timeless message of what happens when we come together — Community is an anthem of hope. It is the first single from Lizzie Thomas’ upcoming original album Awakening, set for release in March 2025. The album release will be preceded by a holiday EP due out in November of this year.
